What is Mahjong?

Mahjong is a Chinese tile game dating back to the 1800s. There are over 40 different kinds of Mahjong—including the version you’ve likely played on your phone. In the early 1920s, Mahjong made its way to the United States, and not long after, the National Mah Jongg League was formed in NYC to formalize and establish rules for American Mahjong—the version that is currently all the rage!

Mahjong is a game of strategy, skill, and luck. The goal of the game is to collect and discard tiles to build a 14-tile hand, declaring “MAHJONG!” before your opponents. American Mahjong is the only version of Mahjong played with an annual card that dictates the options for winning hands for that year. Each card has over 1,000 winning hand combinations (the exact number varies year to year), so there are lots of opportunities to win.

Mahjong cultivates social connections with friends and family, engages the mind by boosting brain health and cognitive function, and offers a beautiful and enjoyable hobby you are sure to enjoy for years to come!

Ways to Play

About

Hi, I'm Kelly! I’ve been playing Mahjong for over two years now, and while I am the founder and owner of The Mahjong Connection, I started my journey where most do—at a lesson, with little knowledge of the game. I was excited about the opportunity to learn something new just for the fun of it.

I was immediately drawn to the beauty of the tiles and tablescapes, the thought-provoking gameplay, and the unplugged social time with friends. I quickly taught my family to play, and it didn’t take long before I realized I wanted to share the joy of Mahjong with everyone I knew. This is more than a business to me... it’s a family affair. I am grateful for my daughter and daughter-in-law, who share my passion for this game and support The Mahjong Connection in various capacities.

Mahjong has brought so much fun and joy into my life. The Mahjong Connection community is filled with kind and gracious players of all skill levels. I encourage you to take a chance on something new or, if you already know how to play, join us in a social league or at a special event. I haven’t met anyone who’s regretted it yet!
